HTML 4 and Flash co-exist quite well and HTML 5 will be adopted soon. Flash is used as a medium for displaying videos, photographs as well as several other dynamic Web applications. Which one should be preferred, Flash or HTML 5?

I have read several articles suggesting whether HTML 5 is a Flash killer. Not it is not, but in this age of new technology, it is quite important to make the right choice of technology.

There are 2 important considerations while choosing a technology – reach and features.

Features
In terms of features, Flash will be ahead and currently available features in Flash are better than those proposed in HTML5. However several demo apps in the market show that HTML5 will have a good improved feature set, if not the best.

Reach
Morgan Stanley expects smartphones and mobile internet to be the major drivers of next generation of internet growth. According to them, “The mobile Internet is ramping faster than desktop Internet did”. Since Flash has limited reach over there, it makes sense to go for HTML5, which is likely to be adopted more quickly.

In terms of reach, Flash is installed on 99% of the browsers. However, if we consider mobile reach, Flash is not available on iPhone, iPod and iPad. Also, on the mobiles it is available, it runs Flash Lite and not exactly Flash. Apple and other mobile companies have not clearly embraced the Flash platform for their devices, due to the proprietory nature of the plugin. Also Flash makes browsers crash significantly more.

HTML5 has a long way to evolve to be displayed correctly in majority of the browsers. On the other hand, we can be sure that HTML5 will be implemented someday on desktop and mobile browsers.

In terms of investing for the long term in web products and applications it makes sense to go for HTML5 to preserve investments by easily adapting applications for the mobile platform. However, if you are making a web banner or front page banner, I really wouldn’t advise switching to HTML5 for the same.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and XHTML (Extensible HTML) are “markup languages” because they include tags to indicate formatting, structure and layout.

Often the relationship between HTML and XHTML pages is an area where you can get into confusion while being on the web. Irrespective of where you stand on the novice to expert scale when it comes to computer languages and terminologies, it is important that you know the basic information and distinction between HTML and XHTML because this would always assist you to use it in future at least, if not now.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and XHTML (Extensible HTML) are “markup languages” because they include tags to indicate formatting, structure and layout. HTML was originally SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) application. Both HTML and XHTML are almost similar to each other with the exception of a few minor points, as XHTML was derived from HTML only to conform to XML (Extensible Markup Language) standards and is just a migration from HTML.

The primary distinction between the two is that the XHTML is the strict version of HTML and possesses rigidity in its approach as compared to HTML which is flexible markup language while ignoring some lapses in structure and coding. The migration of the XHTML from HTML was due to the fact that pages coded in the HTML do not look the same in all browsers always, but HTML would still be opted for, in large cases.
Many HTML tags do not exist in XHTML as they do not include presentation tags such as font tags, etc because the XHTML demands the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Moreover, the tags in XHTML documents must have only one root element and the tags are closed, properly nested and are case sensitive because they must be written in lowercase only, and all the attributes must be in quotes. But in HTML, the document can be still opened while violating these norms and without errors.

Since XHTML has inherited the features of XML, it necessitates the declaration of the DOCTYPE which guides what rules your document should follow whether strict, transitional or frameset. The strict DOCTYPE requires that no lay out information is included in the file where as the transitional DOCTYPE includes some layout information; whereas HTML which does not require any such declaration format.

Cross browser testing is one of the most important factors in web designing always, because of presence of more browsers with time. It becomes important for you to check for the Cross Browser Compatibility of your website when they are already multiple browsers for the users to surf the internet and reach your site. Though IE and Firefox are the most used browsers across the globe, web designers need to check the browser compatibility of the website in all browsers. Even different versions of the same browser render the same site differently. If you have issues with the cross browser testing, then there are some leading cross browser testing resources that make your browser testing more compatible in less time.

1.	BrowserCam – It supports various browsers and operating systems. With the browser capture option, screen shots from any browser and OS can be attained. The Remote Access service can test the JavaScript DHTML, PSD to HTML, PSD to Word Press, and other forms. It is a paid service for daily, monthly, yearly, along with a free trial.
2.	Browsershots – It is a popular free service amongst the designers and the developers that provides with screen shots of a page from just about any browser from all the OSs. There is a paid service too, for faster results.
3.	NetMechanic Browser Photo – Allows you to test different versions of IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari on Windows, Linux and Mac; and provides with various screen resolutions. A paid service which is $15 for one-time use or $150 for unlimited use in a year.
4.	Litmus Applications – Supports all major browsers and reports bug for identification and correction of errors. It also offers testing of PSD to Word Press, and PSD to HTML emails in major email clients. It provides both free service and paid service with full access for $24.
5.	IE Net Renderer – A free service that supports Internet Explorer 8, 7, 6 and 5.5.
6.	BrowserCamp – It lets you test the design compatibility with Mac OS X browsers by supporting 12 different Mac OSX browsers including Firefox, Opera, Safari, Camino, etc. It is a paid service: $19 for monthly subscription or $99 for yearly subscription, and more.
7.	IE Tester from DebugBar – A free web browser which provides rendering and JavaScript engines IE8,IE7,IE6 and IE5.5 on XP and Vista along with the installed IE in the same process.
8.	CrossBrowser Testing – A free service for less than 5 minutes per session and giving you credits for extra minutes, this allows you to test your website with JavaScript and AJAX.
9.	ieCapture – A free service that gives screen shots of website in IE 8 on Windows XP SP2.
10.	Adobe Browserlab – It tests website on Firefox 2 & 3 and IE 6 & 7 for XP; and tests Firefox 2 & 3 and Safari 3 for OS X.

Thus apart from testing whether the page is XHTML and CSS validated, you also need to test for cross browser compatibility. PSD to HTML pages and PSD to WordPress templates converted by us are already tested for proper display on most popular browsers, leaving the designer to only worry about the designs in PSD, Illustrator or Corel.
